It takes time to perfect your craft. Whether you are a beat maker or a classical pianist, you have to put in the time that it takes to be the best. It's about to be 2013. Today's artist can be their own everything: Label, manager, engineer, CD duplicator, etc... Time is so important when it comes down to your craft, but it is also equally as important to all of these other elements for a successful product & career. Bottom line, you can sign away some of your rights to delegate some of these duties to another party or do everything yourself. Opportunity is a big factor too. I imagine Lady GaGa or Eminem would never have chosen the independent route. Where as, a Tech N9ne or a E-40 would never give away their independent dollars. Just food for thought. Peace.
